Common Is A Racist?

In a thread titled "Common Is A Racist" I wrote...

I wish really sensitive white people would just admit it - they're afraid of proud black culture. Admit it - it scares the *beep* out of you, doesn't it?

To which someone responded,

Um... Being proud of being any color wrong. We have no control over that and it is nothing we achieved... How can we be proud of that? Not to mention, if I was proud of being any race, it's as if I would actually be GLAD to be that race as if we're the "best" race to be, which is wrong and makes me a snob...

I really wish people would stop being proud of being any color and just embrace what they have accomplished as an individual...

And just now I responded with,

The "GLAD to be that race" perspective you have about Common is great, chomper, but the reality is we're not all that fair and balanced. Our world is hundreds of years conditioned to favor white over black culture. This is the real world non-white people face every day. The foundations of society as we know it today is steeped in the point of view, from a historical context, that white, Euro-centric, "Christian" ways are superior. As history always has been written from the perspective of those who win the wars, there are a lot of white people in need of a great wake up call to their racial harmony that only exists in their minds.

It'd be nice if it were as simple as the way you put it - that proud to be black people in America, like Common, are anti-white Racists who want to do to us what our ancestors did to them. But again, this perspective lacks clarity on the real history that encompasses more than just the white perspective in America. Take the perspective of the Native Americans when celebrating the 4th of July in the U.S. Take the perspective of women when discussing gender equality in the world. Take the perspective of non-white people when discussing racial equality in the world.

Too many white people live in a vacuum of racial harmony that doesn't exist. A good example of that are all the white people who look to Barack Obama as a wake up call to black America that they are equal now. The truth is, Barack Obama is the only black American to ever gain this much success in this country, and we are how old as a country? Right, for some 230 years it's been an all white, all boys club.

When we're 460 years old as a nation and haven't seen a white, male president since 2008, then you can open up this little bubble of a world you live in where we're all equal, and then you can expect black people to embrace it and actually feel equal. When white people are on the lower end of the population scale, maybe then they'll wake up to the plight of the minority and understand the logic in their reactionary racism. It's not favoritism - it's survival of the black identity!

No one should ignore their race, as it helps identify the culture from which they originate. We are all human beings. So too are we all unique. Celebrate the color of your eyes, the complexion of your skin, the color of your hair, your height or anything that makes you you! We live in a romantic culture, so it is important to have checks and balances to keep us from segregating each other. It is not to say romanticism is wrong - it is merely to point out we are only human. Celebrate that!

well...it's not per se the color...there are latinos, indians, arabs that are my complexion...  it's the culture/heritage one is proud of and that DOES include achievements.

i don't think there's anything wrong with being proud of your heritage... it's like being proud of your family line. nobody's proud of being a certain color skin, obviously they're proud of their background and heritage.

the one thing that pissed me off personally is people who live in a country but refuse to learn the language, laws, customs, etc, and just continue doing their own shit as if they're still in their home country.
example- when i was living in aus and going to claim my welfare check every forthnight, i had to wait 2 hours in line cus half the fucking people there didn't speak english, couldn't be bothered learning english, so they needed a translator. now you need to be an aus citizen to claim welfare, so they were there 5 years minimum.

5 years and you couldn't learn basic english?? how the fuck do you expect to get a job, you gonna be on welfare for the rest of your fucking life! just a burden on tax payers.
this can be solved by a simple language test- fail, and ur on the first boat back.
